The Astartes are the most potent tool of war our species has ever devised. Given near-limitless capacity and appetite for violence, they are humanity itself weaponised. It was the Space Marines who reclaimed the stars and carved out this great Imperium, and it is they who now lead the defence of our domains, shielding us from the terrors which would otherwise find us easy prey.
The great irony, of course, it is that these same demigods who have proven to be our greatest threat. Power is forever accompanied by myriad temptations. Whilst their post-human bodies can ignore almost every venom and toxin known to man, they are as susceptible as the lowliest hive ganger to the poisons of vanity, pride, arrogance and avarice. History, and very bloody history at that, has proven this to be true.

The Avenging Son's reforms reduced the magnitude of the danger they pose, transforming them from the colossal Legions of old to the smaller, constrained formations of today. Even so, a Space Marine Chapter remains a force of incredible power, and the risk of corruption or rebellion is undiminished. And now, as we begin another Founding of these Angels of Death, we seek to increase their numbers tenfold. Mark my words, it is inevitable that the time will come yet again when an entire Chapter, or even Chapters, will stand arrayed against the interests of the Imperium. When our own savage weapons turn upon us, who will we rely upon to extinguish this threat?
There is an obvious answer. Once more we must harness this power ourselves, yoking one of these newly-formed Chapters entirely to our will, binding them with such ties that their loyalty can be considered absolute. And we must then give them the means, methods and will to be an effective and reliable counter to their own kind, ensuring that the horrors of the past do not repeat themselves.
