The screams of the heretic as his intestines were pulled out and tossed into the brazier were rapidly drowned out by the crowd.

As he collapsed in a pool of blood, Arch-Divinatus Melilias raked a bladed finger through the coals, turning and shifting the intestines as they shrivelled.

After a moment he turned to the crowd, stepping up to the ornate leather
tome perched on the edge of the podium. The cries of the crowd rose to a pitch before he spoke.

“The omens are good! Those who die today in the service of the Emperor are guaranteed an eternity in bliss and security at his side.”

Inwardly, Melilias scowled at the crowd. An unwashed mass of worthless poor. They might however become useful. Toumas had proposed a novel solution to the risk of damaging the valuable churches and shrines held by the heretics created by indirect bombardment, and the shells were even now being fitted with wires and timers for remote detonation.
